Excellence in Reflexology Program

Our Mission

We provide the highest quality of personalized reflexology instruction to enable the serious student of reflexology to achieve excellence in both the hands-on application of reflexology technique and the in-depth understanding of reflexology principles.

Welcome to the Excellence in Reflexology Program.

If you are serious about learning excellence in reflexology to improve the health of yourself, your family, friends or clients and/or you wish to practise professionally as a certified reflexologist, please read on.

This program was developed by myself, Joan Cosway-Hayes. I have been a practising reflexologist and a reflexology instructor for over 30 years. I have produced two books and a DVD about reflexology as well as various reflexology learning tools. I am passionate about wholistic health and especially about reflexology. I love to teach people how to use the powerful healing art of reflexology!

My Excellence in Reflexology Program is a one-of-a-kind mentor-style program of reflexology instruction. It consists of small, intimate group classes combined with a series of home study assignments and individual instruction. When students work on their own in addition to working with me, the time that I spend with my students is used to its best advantage. It is an effective road leading to reflexology certification, enabling my students to become the best reflexologists they can be!

Here is an overview of the topics covered at each level, the hours involved and the investment required: Foundation: The foundation of my program is my Reflexology For Every Body Book and DVD. Students must purchase the Book & DVD Package ($80) OR the One of Everything Package (consisting of my Reflexology For Every Body book and DVD, chart, reflexology ball and finger massage ring as well as the Reflexology For Relaxation book by Judy Law: package price $115) before they begin the program in order to fulfill the prerequisites. Call the office to order. (Shipping costs not included.)

Level 1 - Beginner Level: complete instruction in foot reflexology technique, plus how to chart, keep records, and set up your work-space. 8 hours of small group instruction. $295 ~ Payment by Paypal, Visa or American Express credit cards, cheque or cash. (5% discount for cheque/cash payment). Payable in full upon registration.

Level 2 - Certification Level: technique mastery, practicum, in-depth theory study, individual instruction plus coaching and testing. Assignments and practicum will require a minimum of 200 student hours to complete. Includes assignments and reading materials. Certification Level program and fee structure are under revision. Please call/email for more information.

What Levels do I need to take?

Level 1 is meant for the beginner, one who has never studied reflexology before and who wants to learn all of the basics of foot reflexology technique.

Level 2 is for those who want to be a Certified Reflexologist, trained to practise reflexology professionally. If you have no previous reflexology experience you must take Level 1 and then apply into Level 2.

If you have taken a previous reflexology course, a personal assessment will tell me whether you can apply directly into Level 2, or if you need to take Level 1 or instead, book a few mentor hours with me to fine-tune your technique. There is a fee for this assessment.

What does Level 1 involve?

Before attending a Level 1 class, the student must fulfill the prerequisites by reading Chapters 1 to 20 in my book and watching my video a minimum of three times in order to gain a basic understanding of reflexology terminology and principles. The Level 1 class is 8 hours in duration. We work through all foot reflexology technique. We also discuss charting, record keeping and work-space set up. Level 1 is typically held over two mornings or three evenings, one or two weeks apart to allow for practise and integration time. On completion, the student will have a good hands-on ability and may apply into Level 2.

What does Level 2 (Certification Level) involve?

Before applying to the Level 2 program, the student must fulfill the prerequisites by completing and handing in answers to all questions from chapter 21 of Reflexology For Every Body. This requires a lot of self-disciplined work and shows me that a student has the necessary motivation and commitment to complete the remainder of the course requirements. I choose only a few certification level students a year to work with. These completed prerequisites together with your application will help me decide if you are qualified for this program.

Level 2 involves a series of home-study assignments in addition to individual instruction. The course begins at a time mutually convenient to the accepted student and myself. At this meeting, we work to fine-tune technique skills learned in Level 1. The student will be given all of the assignments and materials required to begin the Level 2 practicum and the home-study portion of the program.

The home-study assignments include:

  • reading the book Reflexology For Every Body in detail
  • watching the Reflexology For Every Body video at least 5 more times
  • reading a book on the subject of mind/body healing (your choice; suggestions given)
  • reading additional study materials (provided) on a wide variety of reflexology related subjects
  • listening to study tapes and reading accompanying handouts (provided) on the following subjects: referral areas, helper areas, hand reflexology, Su-Jok Korean hand reflexology, ear reflexology, professional skills, how to set up a reflexology business and how to market your business
  • completion of foot anatomy study, anatomy and physiology study, mid-term quiz
  • practicum: working 30 clients 1X each, keeping a chart on each; working 8 clients 5X each, keeping charts and writing reports; working 5 reflexology students or practitioners 1X each, receiving a detailed critique from each

As the student is working on all of these assignments, she/he will meet individually with me to work on technique on an as-needed basis, fulfilling a minimum of two midterm technique check-up classes in order to thoroughly evaluate how hands-on technique is progressing and to work on fine-tuning and perfecting technique.

It is also recommended that a student experience receiving a professional reflexology treatment. This is an important part of the learning process. The student may book a session either with myself (depending on my availability) or with another recommended practitioner. This cost is not included in the course fee.

The student will have access to myself for questions and assistance by phone, fax or email while working on the program. When all of the assignments have been completed, the student will sit a detailed written examination (2 hours +) and perform practical examinations on both myself and an independent examiner. A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.

The Excellence in Reflexology Program was designed for those students who want flexibility to fit reflexology training into their schedules. Many of my students work part-time or full time, so students are allowed up to a year to finish the program. However, the program can be completed in less time. (8 months is the average time to completion.)

Can I be successful in this program?

If you have the will-power to work on assignments and practicum at home, on your own time, you can be successful. It takes a motivated and self-disciplined person to commit to complete the certification level requirements of this program, but the rewards are great!

If the Excellence in Reflexology Program sounds right for you, please fill in the application form found below and I will be in touch with you personally.

Where are the classes held?

All classes are held at my home office in S.W. Calgary in the neighbourhood of Cougar Ridge.

When are the classes scheduled?

Course dates for the Level 1 programs are set for each semester (fall/winter/spring) on both a prescheduled and an as-needed basis. This means that I create some classes and that I add further classes to meet the specific needs of prospective students. Be sure to fill out question #1 on the application form so that I will know your preferred study schedule.

When a student is accepted into Level 2, the student and I meet together at a mutually convenient time to introduce the assignments and work on technique. This start-up class is followed by further individual follow-up sessions on an as-needed basis to perfect technique, discuss assignments and answer questions. Additional classes will be scheduled to cover hand reflexology, Su-Jok and ear reflexology. Written and practical examinations are scheduled at the end of the program. Home-study assignments can be emailed, faxed, or mailed in for evaluation at any time during the program. The student will have access to myself for questions and assistance by phone, fax or email while working on the program.

Is this certification recognized?

Reflexology is not a regulated profession in Alberta. No specific certification is required. In order to practise professionally you should have the best training possible. The Excellence in Reflexology certification course is recognized by the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada: www.nhpcanada.org. If you value Reflexology Association of Canada certification I suggest you take the R.A.C. course: www.reflexologycanada.ca. Maria Krohmer, a colleague of mine, teaches this course in N.W. Calgary. She can be reached at 403-241-0655.

Refund policies:

Before the start of the course: written notice required at least 7 days prior. 90% of fees refunded. After the start of the course: no refunds.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

-- Aristotle

Some people have greatness thrust upon them. Few have excellence thrust upon them - they achieve it. They do not achieve it unwittingly by doing what comes naturally and they don't stumble into it in the course of amusing themselves. All excellence involves discipline and tenacity of purpose.

-- John William Gardner 1912-2002, Psychologist
